Cigarettes are a consumable item in Deus Ex. Cigarettes can be found in the game world or purchased from cigarette machines for 8 credits each. Multiple packs of cigarettes stack in the inventory, up to a total of 20 at any given time. As an inventory item, cigarettes come in the Stogie brand, although other brands, including No Joke, Big Top, Super 45, and Holy Smokes, can be seen in advertisements throughout the game.

When used, the player incurs 5 base damage at the torso. This amount is extended to 10 damage after accounting for the 2x damage multiplier for torso health, but is reduced if the player has resistance to the "PoisonGas" damage type inflicted by the cigarettes. Consumption of cigarettes will also generate a smoke trail and play a "coughing" noise.
Cigarettes have no positive gameplay effect, but can be used to trigger player death very quickly to take advantage of the "dead man walking" glitch for avoiding detection (see exploits).
