Cloak[1] is an augmentation ability of Anna Navarre and Walton Simons in Deus Ex that renders them partially invisible to the player. Paul Denton also possesses this ability but does not use it during normal gameplay. The cloaking ability of these characters can be interpreted as being similar or analogous to the Cloak augmentation of JC Denton (the player character) from a narrative perspective, but has a different gameplay implementation. Cloak is the only special gameplay ability possessed by augmented NPCs other than resistance or immunity against certain damage types.
Background[]
Simons is said to have a cloak unit that provides partial invisibility.[2] Navarre's cloaking augmentation is not explicitly described in-game but functions identically to Simons' for gameplay purposes, despite the fact that Navarre is mechanically augmented rather than nanotechnologically augmented.
Gameplay[]
Characters with the cloaking ability will activate their cloak when their health drop to a predefined threshold (100 HP for Anna Navarre and Paul Denton, 150 HP for Walton Simons).[3] Since non-player characters are not subject to the bioelectric energy system, the cloak remains active indefinitely unless the character catches on fire or is hit by EMP damage. EMP damage disables the cloak for up to 20 seconds. After expiration of the 20 seconds, the character will re-cloak upon receiving further damage.[4]
Paul Denton possesses the same cloaking ability as Navarre and Simons. However, Paul is always invincible during normal gameplay; therefore, his health cannot drop to the level that would trigger the cloak.
The sole function of the cloak is to make it more difficult for the NPC to be seen by the player. Cloaked characters can still be easily spotted using tech 2 Vision Enhancement. The cloak has no effect on the character's detectability to other NPCs, robots, or animals.
