Walkthrough[]
UNATCO Headquarters (third visit)[]
Visit Joseph Manderley for a debriefing of the previous mission. If you killed Lebedev, Manderley will commend you on a flawless performance. If you killed Anna Navarre, Manderley will suspect that you are trying to cover up for your brother. If Anna killed Lebedev, Manderley will scold you for disobeying his direct orders. In any event, Manderley will tell you that UNATCO has shut down Paul's augmentations and activated his killswitch. He then assigns you go to to Hong Kong to assassinate Tracer Tong, Paul's contact in Hong Kong.
Janice Reed will also provide a side goal for you to locate Jaime Reyes. Jaime Reyes is speaking with Walton Simmons in the break room. Speak to Walton for some interesting dialogue hinting at his involving with the conspiracy.
Prior to leaving for Hong Kong, you may wish to search the headquarters for any loot that may be useful, and speak to the others, such as Alex Jacobson, and Sam Carter for further dialogue. The locked storage closet in the medical bay has the canister for leg augmentation, if you did not pick it up at the warehouse in the second mission.
Hell's Kitchen (second visit)[]
Once you get on Jock's helicopter, Jock reveals that he is also part of the resistance and diverts you to Hell's Kitchen to help your brother at the 'Ton Hotel. Speak to Paul, who will tell you more about the conspiracy and send you to the NSF headquarters to transmit a distress signal to NSF allies such as Silhouette. While in Paul's apartment, open his secret closet using the keypad (4321) hidden behind the painting. The secret closet includes an augmentation upgrade canister and other useful items.
During this mission, you can explore Hell's Kitchen for the second time.
- In the lobby of the 'Ton Hotel, you may talk to Gilbert and Sandra Renton about their problem with local thug JoJo Fine.
- Gilbert will ask for a weapon to defend himself and his daughter against JoJo. You may give him a pistol, stealth pistol, sawed-off shotgun, combat knife, or mini-crossbow. The dialogue options only permit you to choose between giving one of the above weapons (if available, in the order above) or none at all. You may drop a weapon in order to get the dialogue options to show the particular weapon that you want to give.
- JoJo then arrives for a confrontation.
- If you gave Gilbert a weapon and he kills or at least wounds JoJo, Sandra will stay with her father.
- Otherwise, Sandra, if she is still alive, will leave New York.
- If Gilbert died in the previous visit to Hell's Kitchen, JoJo will already be in control of the hotel. If Sandra is still alive, there will be a dialogue between the two in which JoJo tells Sandra to leave.
- The Underworld Tavern is still open. Joe Greene and Harley Filben will tell you that a UNATCO raid is imminent.
- Smuggler's Lair can be visited again for bonus skill points. Smuggler will have another set of items for sale. Due to a bug, the prices will remain high even if you saved Ford Schick in the last visit to Hell's Kitchen (please see the "bugs" section below for possible solutions).
- The sewers can be visited for bonus skill points. Use the entrance near the 'Ton Hotel.
NSF Headquarters[]
The NSF Headquarters is accessible by the road near the tavern and has been occupied by UNATCO troops. Once you are on site, Paul will provide instructions on how to find a datacube in the basement for the login for rooftop computer. While visiting the basement is optional, doing so will provide bonus skill points. Go to the third level and find a security terminal that opens a hatch in the garage. Open the hatch and proceed down to the basement, where you will need to traverse a series of traps to reach an electronics-filled room with the datacube, above a locked cabinet with various loot.
Once you've obtained the login information (mcollins/revolution), head to the roof of the facility. Use the first computer to align the satellite dishes (by click on each of the three buttons). Then, use the second computer to send the distress message. Realizing that you've defected, Walton Simons will then order the UNATCO troops against you. Note that this facility includes a medbot as well as a repair bot, which are useful for preparing for the next phase of the mission.
Return to Paul and escape to Battery Park[]
Upon speaking to Paul again, you learn that the hotel is being raided by UNATCO troops, supported by Men in Black. Paul urges you to escape via the bedroom window, but if you escape via the window, Paul will later die off-screen. Therefore, if you want Paul to survive through the remainder of the story, do not leave the apartment via the window; instead, you must either exit the through the Hotel's front door or die during the UNATCO raid (which causes you to be captured).
If you choose to stay with Paul, you can attempt to fight off the assault and leave the hotel through its main entrance. Despite having his augmentations deactivated and claiming to be unable to climb to the roof, Paul remains invincible during actual gameplay, and can take on any number of enemies without being in danger. During the raid, Paul may despawn if he is out of your sight for a certain duration of time. Paul's despawning will not affect his survival.
The game will transition to the next mission if you die at any point during the UNATCO raid. However, you will be awarded skill points for reaching Hell's Kitchen subway station and additional skill points if you then reach Battery Park and exit out of its subway station. Dying during the raid will not affect Paul's survival, as long as you do not exit out the apartment window.
To get to Battery Park, use the keypad code provided by Paul (6282) to unlock the entrance to the subway station outside of the hotel. Take the subway to Battery Park, where you will encounter Anna Navarre (unless she was killed in the last mission). Anna can be killed here. However, Gunther Hermann, who is waiting outside the subway station, is invincible and cannot be killed. The game will transition to the next mission if you surrender to Gunther or go down fighting against Anna, Gunther, or the UNATCO troops outside.
Notes[]
- Only sending the signal is required to advance the story and goals. If JC sends the signal without rotating the dishes, Paul will complain about this and ask him to try again. Both datalinks will play if the player then does so, but if they instead head for the exit, Walton Simons will intervene and the mission will progress as normal with all further game dialogue assuming that the signal was received by NSF allies.
- Paul's survival depends solely on whether the player bailed out the window after the raid has begun.
- Specifically, if the player takes the window exit, a pair of flag triggers will set the flags PlayerBailedOutWindow and PaulDenton_Dead, which will affect subsequent story interactions. Internally, the prerequisite for these triggers is the flag TalkedToPaulAfterMessage_Played, which is set when the player has talked to Paul in his apartment after sending the signal. Prior to the TalkedToPaulAfterMessage conversation, the player is free to use the window exit without setting those flags.
- After the TalkedToPaulAfterMessage conversation has played, exiting out the window under any circumstance will result in Paul being considered dead. For example, even if you have defeated the UNATCO troops and exited the hotel's front doors, if you then re-enter the hotel and exit through the window, then Paul will be considered dead.
- Upon reaching Battery Park, if you turn back and re-enter the subway train from which you came, you will spawn on top of the 'Ton hotel instead of at the Hell's Kitchen subway station.
- The Battery Park map includes invisible barriers designed to prevent the player from leaving the UNATCO blockade. However, it is possible to exit the blockade and explore the rest of the map by pushing away the large metal crates at the SE edge of the blockade using the Microfibral Muscle augmentation. Jock's helicopter can be found parked nearby, but does not have any special interactions. Even if Jock's helicopter is reached, it is not possible to leave via Jock's helicopter.
- Gunther Hermann cannot be killed unless console commands are used to disable his invincibility. Killing Gunther in this manner has no effect on the story.
- If Sandra decided to run away from New York, JC will meet her later, mentioning what happened to her after leaving. If Sandra stays, you can find her in the Underworld Tavern one more time in a future mission. If the Rentons were never met, they will both be alive and the latter will happen - with different dialogue.
Bugs[]
- The game script provides for Smuggler giving a discount if Ford was rescued during the previous visit to Hell's Kitchen. However, the FordSchickRescued flag that was set in that earlier mission expires before the start of this mission. As a result, the discount and its associated dialog do not occur in-game.
- Smuggler's discount can be restored by manually restoring the FordSchickRescued flag. To do so, open the debug menu. In the debug menu, click "Edit Flags" and then "Add Flag." Enter "FordSchickRescued" into the "flag name" field and set the "value" field to "true." Press "ok" to add the flag.
- To restore all of Smuggler's dialog, including his acknowledged that the player saved Ford, the above must be done prior to speaking with him.
- Alternatively, if the player has not yet progressed to this mission, the debug menu can also be used to edit the existing FordSchickRescued flag to prevent it from expiring.
- Similarly, the game includes dialogue for Ford Schick in Smuggler's Lair. However, he does not spawn even if he was rescued during the previous visit to Hell's Kitchen. This content can be restored by using the game console to summon Ford Schick within Smuggler's Lair, i.e., by using the console command "summon FordSchick" (with cheats enabled).
- The above omissions can be interpreted as bugs in the game script, although there is no known developer commentary that confirms whether the omissions are bugs or intentional cut content. For a description on the unused content, please see the main article on Ford Schick.
Trivia[]
- In prerelease design document v13.12, this mission was originally named "M04: Brother in Peril".
