The 6th mission in Deus Ex is set in Hong Kong and features the MJ12 Helibase, the Hong Kong city hub (starting at the Wan Chai Market), and the Hong Kong VersaLife facility. In this mission, JC Denton arrives in Hong Kong to seek the help of Tracer Tong, who might be able to deactivate his kill switch. After meeting Tong, JC must then infiltrate VersaLife's laboratories.

MJ12 Helibase[]
Majestic 12 has trapped Jock's Helicopter inside their helibase. The main objective is to enter Flight Control Deck 1, which houses the switch that allows Jock's helicopter to escape. Flight Control Deck 1 is upstairs of the stairway to the left of the starting position. However, to get into Deck 1, you must first obtain the NanoKey in the barracks downstairs. The NanoKey is locked inside the third locker (with a 30% strength lock).
The barracks is well guarded, but you may weaken the troops there by releasing poison gas (doing so also grants bonus skill points). To release the gas, enter the vent openings on the floor of the helipad area. The ground vents lead to the munitions bay, which contains a datacube with the code 99871. After obtaining the code, find a nearby room with three gas tanks and a keypad. Entering the code into the keypad will release the poison gas.
Once you've obtained the NanoKey from the locker, go to Flight Control Deck 1 and press the button for "weapon lock." Before leaving the area, Jock will fire missiles to blow open the lockdown door, which reveals an elevator. The electrical hazard can be disabled by bypassing a 60% strength control panel, or you can take your chances by passing right through. Use the elevator to enter the market of the Wan Chai District. Note that you can still return to the helibase using the keypad code 989.
Wan Chai District - Overview[]
The Wan Chai Market is the center of the largest city hub in the game. The areas in Hong Kong are diagrammed below from west to east:

The Hong Kong city hub has numerous areas that can be explored. All areas can be revisited up until you leave Hong Kong. Canal Road is the only location that is significantly altered as the story progresses. Initially, Canal Road will have a police blockade at one end, where one of the policemen carries a clip modification. After meeting Tracer Tong for the second time, the police blockade will be cleared and no police will be present.
Notable areas that are not directly involved with mission goals include the following:
- In the Waterways, there is a large boat with a vendor who sells three weapon augmentations. The boat has a secret engine compartment, opened by a lantern switch on the deck, that includes a repair bot.
- Near the above boat is the home of a boat person. Finding his home results in an exploration bonus.
- In the Waterways, there is a bar called the "Old China Hand." The freezer room of this bar has a vent that leads to a long, underwater path to the collapsed tunnel. Both ends of the collapsed tunnel have useful loot. The west end has an upgrade canister, while the east end has a laser modification. Tong will eventually mention this area, but this area can be accessed at any time. If you are lacking in swimming-related skill, augs, or gear, the regeneration can counteract all drowning damage if upgraded.
- In Tonnochi Road, Jock's apartment can be accessed by jumping from Maggie Chow's penthouse.
Investigating Maggie Chow[]
To begin the first set of mission objectives, visit Gordon Quick at the entrance of the Luminous Path compound. Before you are allowed to visit Tracer Tong, you must first earn Gordon's trust. Gordon states that the Red Arrow triads had developed an advanced sword called the Dragon's Tooth sword, but their leader was murdered and a woman named Maggie Chow has blamed his death on the Luminous Path, thereby starting a war between the two triad groups. Gordon wants you to investigate Maggie Chow, whom he believes has deceived the triads, and to look for the Dragon's Tooth sword.
Chow is found at the penthouse of the Queen's Tower in Tonnochi Road. Tonnochi Road can be reached by crossing the canal. Speak to Chow, who will tell you that she is on your side. Chow is interested in settling the dispute between the triads, and asks you to retrieve evidence from the basement vault of the police station.
Retrieving the evidence is optional, but you will receive bonus skill points for entering the police vault. If you do obtain the evidence, you will learn that Chow has been manipulating the triads all along.The basement of the police station can be accessed by the codes 911 (for the front entrance) and 87342 (for the basement vault).
You will need to find the Dragon's Tooth Sword, which is located in a secret MJ12 quarters adjacent to Chow's penthouse. This area can be reached by any of the following methods:
- In Chow's penthouse, there's a lantern switch that opens a direct passage to the MJ12 quarters.
- In the lobby of Queen's Tower, there's a second elevator (keypad code 3444) that leads to an empty floor where a junkie is encountered. On this floor, there is a locked fence that leads to the MJ12 quarters.
- On the right exterior side of the Queen's Tower (where a robot is patrolling), there is a locked fence. Open the fence to access the elevator shaft of the penthouse elevator. Activate the keypad (code 1709) to the roof area, gaining an exploration bonus once you reach the top portion of the shaft. You can then enter the MJ12 quarters from the roof via a door locked by a keypad.
Once inside the MJ12 quarters, use the computer (mchow/insurgent) to open the weapon case holding the Dragon's Tooth sword. You will then receive instructions from Tracer Tong. Maggie Chow will de-spawn whenever you enter the MJ12 quarters (or the police station basement, whichever you visited first). She will be encountered again later on.
After obtaining the sword, return to Gordon Quick, who will direct you to Max Chen at the Lucky Money (downstairs of the Wan Chai Market) to convince him of Chow's deceit. After speaking with Max Chen, you may now enter the Luminous Path compound. Make your way through a series of hidden entrances to find Tracer Tong. Note that Tong's lab has both a repair bot and a medbot for your use. Alex Jacobson will also be found here.
Tracer Tong will deactivate your killswitch and send you on a new mission, which is to retrieve the ROM-encoding for the Dragon's Tooth sword from the laboratories at VersaLife. Tong believes that providing the ROM encoding to both Triad groups will result in peace. Tong will also mention that Richard Hundley, a certain shift supervisor in VersaLife's data entry facility, can be persuaded to sell you a pass to the labs.
VersaLife Facility - Part 1[]
VersaLife's facility is accessed by the code 06288 at the elevator near the entrance to Lucky Money. The initial location, VersaLife's Data Entry Facility, appears as an ordinary office. You will be greeted by a receptionist, Destiny Savannah, who tells you that Hundley is upstairs and wearing a suit.
To enter the level 1 labs, you will need a code for the elevator on the third floor.
- One option is to purchase the code from Hundley for 2000 credits. Hundley can be seen walking back and forth between different locations of the office.
- The alternative, and better, option is to speak to John Smith, the lone worker on the third floor cubicles. John states that he is fearful because other workers have getting the Gray Death and shipped off to a camp. He requests that you kill Hundley. After killing (or knocking out) Hundley, return to John to receive the elevator code. You will also receive a 150 SP character interaction bonus.
- If your Computer skills are advanced enough, you can also access either the receptionist's terminal or any of the cubicle terminals found throughout the offices and click on "Create Temp Security Pass." This will give you the elevator code without the need to spend any credits or take down Hundley.
The elevator to the labs is near Hundley. Enter the code 6512 to access the elevator.
The level 1 lab has a markedly different appearance from the data entry office. Straight ahead is a sculpture of Majestic 12's hand-over-the-earth symbol, the same one seen in the game's intro. You are also greeted by a supervisor who informs you that your pass will be cancelled any time that you cause trouble.
The quickest way to the ROM is a secret passage activated by a keypad on the hand sculpture (code: 12). Follow the way down, and continue to find the main objective. The computer in the center of the room contains the schematics for the sword. If you prefer a more scenic or stealthy route, you can access a series of air ducts from the bathroom found in the corridor that leads off from the right of the sculpture. These will eventually take you to a vertical elevator shaft that offers multiple exits into the level 1 lab sections, including one path via a series of red-lit ducts that will take you directly above the main computer room.
Access the computer (mchow/damocles) to upload the schematics. Note that uploading the schematics will cause an alarm.
The level 1 lab also has a laboratory area, where you can find three augmentation canisters, two of which appear for the first time. As you enter the upper level of the lab area, you can also eavesdrop on a conversation between Bob Page and Maggie Chow. The code for the chamber is 5878, but hacking the computer will disable the hazards within the room and open the door for you. When you've gotten everything you need, head back to the data entry facility to exit to the Wan Chai Market. The security guards and receptionist will be hostile as you exit.
Next, head to the Temple where the two triad leaders are meeting. Gordon Quick and Max Chen will cement their alliance. They will also invite you to the Lucky Money for some drinks. Joining them at the bar is entirely optional and does not complete any goal or result in any skill points.
Return to Tong's laboratory, where he will give you the next assignment – gain access to VersaLife's Level 2 labs and locate information on the structure of the Gray Death virus. Tong believes that the information on the virus' structure may pave the way to developing a cure.
In Tong's laboratory, you may hear various characters say that Jaime Reyes has arrived (if you told him to go to Hong Kong), or that Paul Denton has arrived (if he is still alive). This is an oversight. Jaime and Paul will not appear until your next visit to Tong's lab.
VersaLife Facility - Part 2[]
There are two ways into the Level 2 Labs:
- The police blockade in Canal Road will now be cleared, allowing you to access a door (code 55655) that eventually leads to the Level 2 Labs. This code is given by Tracer Tong.
- Alternatively, you may enter the front entrance of the Data Entry Facility, just as you did before. This time, the front entrance will be heavily guarded. The benefit, however, is that you get 100 SP when you reach the elevator to the Level 2 Labs. Use the same code (55655) to access the elevator.
When you're inside the Level 2 Labs, Daedalus will tell you that he wants you to destroy the universal constructor in the lab, adding another primary goal.
Proceed until you see a hallway whose entrance is guarded by blue lasers and two robots. If you wish to fight the robots, you may pass directly through the blue lasers (note that if you reached here by opening a ramp, the ramp will be closed on this entrance and must be opened using the security terminal in the area above). Alternatively, in the SE corner of this area, there is a floor vent that leads to a location past the lasers. Using this vent path will also grant you an exploration bonus.
At the far end of the hallway is a computer terminal overlooking a large open area (the chamber of the Universal Constructor). Log into the computer (mchow/damocles) to upload the virus schematics and open the Universal Constructor chamber. To the right of this computer is a control room with a security terminal on the wall. Access the security terminal (MJ12/research) to open the NanoTech Containment Pods down below and raise the Cascade Shutdown Console.
Now, proceed to the UC chamber and enter the structure on the platform. Here, you will find three augmentation canisters, including the Power Recirculator / Synthetic Heart canister (the only appearance of this canister in the game), as well as two other canisters that have previously appeared. There is also an augmentation upgrade canister found at this location. If you use the security terminal described above, all four containment pods will be open. There will be a medbot down the ladder that you can use to install canisters.
Proceed down the ladder, where Maggie Chow will confront you (unless she was killed in her penthouse). Whether you kill or incapacitate Chow will not affect the story. After defeating Chow, go to the keypad on the Cascade Shutdown Console (raised by the security terminal described above) and enter the code 525 to start the destruction sequence. Escape the facility by swimming into a pipe on the floor of the UC chamber (find the pipe that does not contain toxic liquid). Continue through to exit at the Waterways. Tong will contact you on infolink, saying that he has discovered that the virus manufactured in Hong Kong was loaded onto a super-freighter that was previously owned by Illuminati member Stanton Dowd.
Return to Tong in his laboratory, where he will tell you that your next goal is to return to New York to seek out Stanton Dowd. If you told Jaime Reyes to go to Hong Kong, he will be in the infirmary and will provide you with an augmentation upgrade canister. Paul Denton, if he is alive, will also be here, but will inform you that he needs time to recover and will be unable to join you in New York. When you're done with the area, go to Jock's helicopter to leave for New York.
Notes[]
- In the MJ12 Helibase, the missiles that Jock fires are implemented in-game as ordinary LAW rockets.[1] Therefore, it is possible for the Aggressive Defense System augmentation to intercept them when they are fired. This does not prevent a softlock because the mission script also makes the lockdown door breakable by other means by this point.
- The objectives of finding the Dragon's Tooth Sword and with meeting Max Chen can be completed prior to speaking with Gordon Quick. If this is done, the dialogue with Gordon Quick will be slightly different. The objective of obtaining the ROM from the Level 1 Labs can also be completed out-of-order (e.g., completed before speaking to Gordon Quick or Tracer Tong), but the game's dialogue will not reflect this.
- The basement of the Police Station is locked by a keypad with an infinite bypass strength, and is not intended to be opened without the code that is given by Maggie Chow. If the code is used and the evidence is retried prior to traveling to Chow's penthouse, then Chow will not spawn at the penthouse (but will still appear at the Universal Constructor).
- After destroying the universal constructor, the Level 2 Labs can be revisited only via the entrance from Canal Road. The pathway from Level 1 Labs will be blocked by a lockdown door.
- This mission can become softlocked if Gordon Quick becomes hostile and this hostility prevents certain character interactions from occurring. For example, after exiting the VersaLife facility for the first time, the objective of making peace between the triads will be impossible if Gordon had become hostile. Gorden can become hostile if you attack him or if you enter the Luminous Path compound prematurely, such as by stacking objects to climb over the compound's walls.
