Manual of Style

This page contains the Deus Ex Wiki's content policy. It describes criteria and rules for all or specific types of content.

General

  • All content should relate to the Deus Ex series.
  • All content needs to be accurate. The Deus Ex Wiki aims to provide reliable information. In particular, adding improper speculation and personal inventions (fan fiction, fan art etc.) to articles is not allowed. To ensure accuracy, content should be referenced where appropriate.
  • All content needs to be verifiable. Other editors need to be able to check and verify it. Again, referencing content ensures that this is the case.
  • All content needs to be informative. Information that is only of interest to the writer or to other editors (as opposed to readers) should not be included in articles.
  • All content needs to be objective. Opinions, subjective guides, and "my favorite"-style passages should not be added to articles.
  • All content must be written from a neutral point of view, representing views fairly and without bias. A neutral point of view neither sympathizes with nor disparages its subject.
  • All content needs to abide by copyright regulations.
  • Content should comply with the manual of style whenever possible.

Criteria for specific content

Lore content

  • All content must comply with this wiki's canon policy, which defines the scope of canon and specifies that non-canon content should not be conflated with canon content.
  • In accordance with the requirement that all content needs to be accurate, story summaries should adhere to the content of the original narrative as closely as possible. Story summaries should avoid making assumptions on facts that are not explicitly part of the narrative, unless the facts being assumed are clearly implied and are not reasonably subject to different interpretations.
  • Where the narrative contains ambiguities or unresolved plot points, articles should not attempt to resolve the ambiguities or unresolved plot points by speculating on the writers' intent.

Gameplay content

  • Factual information on game mechanics, mission structures (including the effects of player choices), gameplay solutions (including passwords and keycodes), and character/items stats comply with the objectivity requirement.
  • In contrast to the above, subjective gameplay advice, i.e., gameplay recommendations premised on a subjective preference on how the game should be played, is not permitted because it does not comply with the requirement that all content must be objective. Deus Ex series games generally enable the player to choose from different playstyles as well as different approaches towards accomplishing objectives. In many cases, subjectivity can be avoided by describing the different possible approaches without bias towards any particular playstyle.
  • Characterizations of the relative advantages of specific gameplay elements, such as weapons, items, and augmentations, must be factual and should avoid making subjective assertions.

Content on unofficial mods

  • The Deus Ex Wiki permits a limited amount of coverage of unofficial game modifications. A particular unofficial mod may be covered by a single page specifically covering that mod. Mod pages are permitted to have a reasonable number of subpages. Subpages are pages that use a forward slash in their titles (in the form of "page/subpage") to denote a subpage relationship to a parent page.
  • Articles that cover official content may not include content specific to third party mods. Therefore, walkthrough articles covering official game versions may not include information on elements of game missions specific to unofficial mods. Articles on game mechanics in official game versions may not include information on game mechanics specific to unofficial mods.
  • Screenshots with third party textures or third party models are not permitted in articles covering official content.

Real-world information

  • Articles on in-universe topics may not include real-world information outside of the Deus Ex series and its lore, except when used in the "Trivia" section to explain a real-world reference.

Media

  • Embedded videos may only be used in articles if they illustrate issues which cannot be expressed by written text at all or only with difficulty. Examples for acceptable videos are game trailers or a video illustrating how to find an item which is in a hard-to-find location.
