There are thirteen missions in Deus Ex, as well as an optional training mission. Missions are not explicitly identified in-game, but the term "mission" is used internally, as well as by the game developers and other official sources, to refer to the sequential stages of the single player story. Unlike later games in the series, there are no side missions in Deus Ex, although there are optional objectives throughout the game that function similarly to side missions.

Gameplay[]

Missions are associated with certain goals that the player must complete to progress onto the next mission. Missions may also include optional goals that the player can complete. Completing goals often (but not always) result in a reward of skill points to the player.

Although missions are not explicitly identified in-game, each mission is associated with a set of maps, also known as map segments, that constitute the mission. While it is often possible to travel back and forth between different map segments of a particular mission, it is never possible to travel back to a specific map of a previous mission. For example, during the second mission, the player may revisit any of the Battery Park and Hell's Kitchen maps prior to completing the mission. After the mission has been completed, it is no longer possible to revisit those specific maps. Although the player will return to Battery Park and Hell's Kitchen later on, these areas will be different maps (i.e., different map files) with different objects and interactions. Progression from one mission to another will reset the text in the player's mission log.

List of missions[]

Mission numbers[]

Internally, the thirteen missions listed above are numbered as missions 01–06, 08–12 and 14–15, respectively. This numbering system is used as labels for map files, game scripts, and other internal game assets, but is not seen by the player in-game. Numbers 07 and 13 correspond to mission that were cut from the game or merged with other missions (for more information on cut missions see the article on Deus Ex cut content).

Since the internal numbering system skips two numbers, and is not used in-game, they have not been adopted as the primary identifier of missions on this wiki. Instead, this wiki uses the ordinal labels "1st" (first), "2nd" (second), "3rd" (third), etc. for the game's missions, in order to avoid using a numbering system that skips numbers, while still maintaining the sequence of the mission in the nomenclature.

Mission names[]

Missions names do not appear in-game. However, names appear in Deus Ex: Prima's Official Strategy Guide and in pre-release design documents.

Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

The guide includes a "missions" section that uses the following mission names.

  • "Rescue the Lady" – 1st Mission
  • "On the Town" – 2nd Mission
  • "The Lebedev Sanction" – 3rd Mission
  • "Inevitable Choices" – 4th Mission
  • "Breakout" – 5th Mission
  • "Hong Kong" – 6th Mission
  • "The Supertanker" – 7th and 8th Missions combined
  • "Gray Paree" – 9th Mission
  • "Treasures of the Templars" – 10th Mission
  • "Vandenberg AFB" – 11th Mission
  • "By the Sea" – 12th Mission
  • "Area 51" – 13th Mission

Although the guide is considered to be an official source on the game, these mission names were rarely used by the player base. Furthermore, the guide's delineation of missions is not fully consistent with the game's internal delineation, since it combines the 7th and 8th missions into a single mission. Accordingly, these mission names have not been adopted as the primary identifier of the game's missions on this wiki.

Design Document version 13.12[]

Design Document version 13.12, which predated the release of the game by about six months, includes names for all missions in the released game, organized into three acts. The design document does not explicitly state whether these names were intended to be used as mission names in the released game, or merely descriptions of missions used during development. Acts are not referenced in the released game or any post-released official media, but have appeared in design documents dating back to the Shooter: Majestic Revelations precursor concept.
