DX1 DamageIconEMP (colorized)

EMP is a damage type in Deus Ex. EMP causes no actual damage, but can be used to shut down robots and disrupt other electronic functions. When EMP damage is taken by the player, the HUD will display a blue indicator icon resembling a plasma globe.

Special properties[]

EMP damage has no effect on health. Its sole use is for the following special effects:

  • Robots can be permanently disabled by EMP damage. EMP damage will drain a robot's EMP health. When EMP health is reduced to zero, the robot will shut down permanently.
  • Turrets, security cameras, alarm panels, and laser tripwire emitters are confused when hit by EMP damage. When confused, these devices will not function. Confusion is temporary. Once confusion has lapsed, the device will return to normal operation.
    • For turrets, security cameras, and alarm panels, the duration of confusion depends on the amount of EMP damage that is inflicted upon the device. The length in range ranges from a minimum of 10 seconds to a maximum of 30 seconds. The maximum duration of 30 seconds is achieved by an EMP damage of 165.
    • Laser emitters enter a confused state for 10 seconds upon receiving any EMP damage. While in the confused state, the emitter will not trigger; however, it will still randomly emit a (non-interactive) beam for short durations.
  • EMP damage disables the cloaking ability of certain augmented characters for up to 20 seconds.
  • For the player character (JC Denton) only, taking EMP damage will result in loss of bioelectric energy in an amount equal to the amount of EMP damage taken.

Targets not covered by the above are completely unaffected by EMP damage.

Resistance[]

  • For the player, resistance is provided by the EMP Shield augmentation.
    • Hazmat Suits do not protect against EMP damage, contrary to their in-game description.

Damage sources[]

Damage sources marked by an asterisk (*) also cause "shocked" damage, which is a separate damage type.
