Energy (also known as biocell energy) is a gameplay resource in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Energy is used to operate certain augmentations (including the takedown functionality of the Cybernetic Arm Prosthesis).

Background[]

Main article: Sarif Series 8 Energy Converter (DXMD)

Adam Jensen's energy is regulated by his Sarif Series 8 Energy Converter, which transforms nutrients such as fat, glucose, and adrenaline into an electric charge that is then stored in augmentation-specific power biocells. Jensen may also gain energy by consuming biocells directly.

Energy meter[]

State Display
Idle DXMD energy meter - idle
Activation DXMD energy meter - aug activation
Sustained use DXMD energy meter - aug use
Recharging DXMD energy meter - recharging

The energy meter displays the following properties:

  • The blue horizontal bar (including both the thick portion and the thin portion) indicates the amount of energy that is currently available to the player.
  • The white vertical line indicates the recharge limit (formally known as the maximum storage capacity). The recharge limit is maximum amount of energy that will regenerate. The recharge limit can be extended by the "Enhanced Capacity Biocells" and "Ultra-Capacity Biocells" upgrades in the Sarif Series 8 Energy Converter augmentation tree.
  • The thick portion of the horizontal bar is the lower limit of the recharge limit. That is, the the recharge limit can never decay into the thick portion of the horizontal bar.

Energy use[]

Augmentations use energy as follows:

  • Activation cost – Each time an augmentation is activated, the recharge limit will decay by an amount that is initially shown in red. This decay of the recharge limit is commonly known as the activation cost. All augmentations that use energy have an activation cost.
  • Sustain cost – Certain augmentations, including those that can be toggled on and off (such as Smart Vision and Glass-Shield Cloaking System) will continuously drain the player's energy while they are active.
    • While the augmentation remains active, available energy is slowly drained, but the recharge limit is no longer further affected.
    • The only exception to the above rule the TITAN, which will reduce the recharge limit together with the currently available energy while it remains active.

The following augmentations use energy:

Augmentation Uses energy Sustained by energy
Smart Vision
Implanted Rebreather
Cybernetic Arm Prosthesis Energy use only for takedowns
and "Punch Through Walls"
Quicksilver Reflex Booster
Focus Enhancement
Icarus Dash
Glass-Shield Cloaking System
Rhino Dermal Armor Energy use and sustain cost only when
"Electromagnetic Pulse Shielding" is active
Cybernetic Leg Prosthesis Energy use and sustain cost only
when actively using "Leg Silencer"
Remote Hacking
TITAN ✔ + recharge drain

Recharging energy[]

Once the player stops using all active augmentations, energy will recharge after a delay period. The player's base recharge delay and base recharge rate are determined based on the difficulty level, and are modified by the "Recharge Delay" and "Recharge Rate" upgrades in the Sarif Series 8 Energy Converter augmentation tree.

Restoring the recharge limit[]

Due to the activation cost described above, repeated use of augmentations will cause the recharge limit to decay until it reaches the thick portion of the horizontal bar. A decayed recharge limit can be restored to its original maximum as follows:

  • Consuming biocells will restore the recharge limit, as well as current energy.
  • Upgrading any augmentation will reset the recharge limit (and current energy) to the original maximum. This benefit is provided only by upgrading an existing augmentation and not by unlocking a new augmentation.
  • Certain story-related mission transitions will provide a free reset of the recharge limit.
