Flares are small devices appearing in Deus Ex that are used to create a yellow bright light source or signal without exploding. Many flares can be found in the earlier parts of the game. These items are held in the inventory, and upon being used, fall to the ground and provide light for several seconds before dissipating. They also can be used for a distraction to the enemy, as they provide light and noise. Flares become rarer later in the game, and are less effective than the tech goggles, light and Vision Enhancement for lighting up areas, making them a hard item to use.
