Keyring

The nanokey ring, also known informally as simply the "keyring," is an item in Deus Ex used to open locked doors that require a corresponding nanokey. The nanokey ring does not take up any inventory space, and the player is always equipped with it during the entire course of the game.

Description[]

A nanokey ring can read and store the two-dimensional molecular patterns from different nanokeys, and then recreate those patterns on demand.
IN-GAME DESCRIPTION

Use[]

The keyring uses "nanokeys", blue cylinders that must be collected for a keyring to access a target. The keyring is always in the player's inventory, and cannot be dropped or removed from their item queue. Neither it nor nanokeys take up space in the player's inventory grid.

The LED will turn green when a door is locked or unlocked successfully, and red if the required nanokey has not been obtained or if the door cannot be unlocked by the player regardless. Use on a locked door will return the message "Your NanoKey Ring doesn't have the right code" if a nanokey can be used but is not available within the keyring. Locked doors that cannot be unlocked using nanokeys will return "It's locked" instead.

Notes[]

  • Internally, nanokeys use a specific key ID (invisible to the player) that can be reused. This causes nanokeys with a different description (but the same key ID) to not be added if the keyring already acknowledged that key ID. Keys without a description will have a description error string but still remain fully functional when using the keyring.
