Turret on the ground in Deus Ex

Automated defense turrets, or simply turrets, are automated security devices in Deus Ex. Turrets serve as obstacles in the game environment and will fire upon the player when the player is detected.

Overview[]

Turrets are mounted to other structures, such as a ceiling, wall, or the ground.

Turrets are usually coordinated with a security camera, alarm sounder panel, or laser tripwire. In such instances, the turret will activate only when player is detected by the security camera or laser tripwire, or when the alarm sounder panel has been activate. Otherwise, the turret will not fire and will remain neutral. Accordingly, turrets can usually be neutralized by destroying the device coordinating the turret, or by hacking a security terminal and shutting down the coordinating device. An active turret is capable of tracking the player on its own. However, if the coordinating device is destroyed, the turret will immediately stop firing and will revert to its neutral orientation.

Some turrets are linked to a security terminal. A level of advanced or higher in the computer skill allows the player to directly disable turrets, or set them to fire on the enemy, when the security terminal controlling the terminal is hacked.

Turret gun[]

The turret gun has the following weapon stats:[1]

  • Damage: 5
  • Accuracy: 50%
  • Rate of fire: 4 rounds per second
  • Maximum range: 512 units (32 feet)

Damage caused by the turret gun is categorized under the "AutoShot" damage type. For the player, resistance to this damage type is provided by ballistic armor and the Ballistic Protection augmentation. The difficulty level affects the amount of damage that the player takes from turrets.

Destroying turrets[]

Like cameras and alarm panels, turrets have a minimum damage threshold of 50. Therefore, turrets are invulnerable against weapons that do less than 50 damage, with the exception of shotguns loaded with sabot shells and explosion damage. Sabot shells of shotguns inflict 50% damage against turrets.

Weapons that can inflict at least 50 damage include explosives (such as LAMs, GEP gun rockets, LAW rockets, and the Assault Rifle's 20mm HE secondary ammunition) and a sniper rifle with a master level rifle skill. For additional examples, please see the above-linked article on minimum damage threshold.

Notes[]

  • Ceiling and wall mounted turrets spawn with their gun oriented in the "wrong" direction. Therefore, turrets that are approached head on will sometimes need to pivot up to 180 degrees in order to target the player.
  • Turrets in the game have infinite ammo. However, the "AmmoAmount=1000" default property of the turret class suggests that turrets were, at one point during development, planned to have limited ammunition.
  • The turret gun is a hardcoded feature of the turret and does not exist as a weapon on its own.
