In Deus Ex game mechanics, a "hitscan weapon" (or "instant-hit weapon") is a weapon that register attacks instantly across its effective distance. Hitscan weapons are distinguished from projectile weapons, which generate a projectile as a separate entity that must travel through the game environment to reach the target.
The term "hitscan" is not used in the game itself, but is the standard industry term used to describe this type of weapon implementation in video games. Internally, hitscan weapons have the bInstantHit property set to true.
List of hitscan weapons[]
- Pistol
- Stealth pistol
- All rifle skill weapons (assault rifle, sniper rifle, sawed-off shotgun, assault shotgun), except when the assault rifle is loaded with the 20mm HE grenade
- All melee-range low-tech skill weapons except for the pepper gun and throwing knives
- All melee-range attacks of animals are implemented using hitscan weapons.
- The following non-player weapons: Robot MG, WeaponSpiderBot, WeaponSpiderBot2, and MJ12 Commando Gun
Properties[]
- Hitscan weapons inflict damage based on the weapon's HitDamage attribute, which is displayed in the inventory interface.
- Range mechanics differ between hitscan and projectile weapons. For details, please see the linked article.
- Hitscan weapons benefit from the range modification, which increases the "accurate range" attribute.
- The laser sight modification provides perfect accuracy to hitscan weapons when the laser pointer is activated (unless a scope modification has also been installed).
- Hitscan firearms that use 10mm, 76.2mm, or 30.06 ammo will randomly produce a "tracer" projectile when fired. Tracers visually indicate the directions in which NPCs are firing their weapons, but tracers themselves are entirely cosmetic and have no effect in terms of inflicting damage.
