Honza Epstein[1] is a cut character mentioned in the game files of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, but is not mentioned in the actual game. The game files describe him as a sculptor and augmented rights activist. A quest involving him is also described.
Summary[]
Honza is a sculpture who wishes to display his work, a clay golem, in the plaza of the Překážka district of Prague. His work is meant to be a homage to the myth of the Golem, and is intended to support activism for augmented rights. However, the police is being coerced by a local politician not to display the work.
According to the descriptions in the game files, the player would have been able to complete a quest resulting in approval for Honza to display his work. The descriptions also suggest that Honza would have been a background character whose story is conveyed through emails that the player may discover, but is never encountered in-game. Additionally, the player would have been able to find an eBook on the Golem Myth that was part of Honza's book collection.
No mention of Honza exists in the actual game. However, the concept of augmented artists was adopted in the design of Překážka's in-game area, which includes an art gallery featuring works of augmented artists.
Descriptions in the game files[]
The game files includes four descriptions that pertain to Honza and his associated quest. The descriptions appear to be game design texts, rather than content intended to be presented to the player.
Backstory[]
- Honza is almost done with the making of his clay golem. He would like to have it displayed in the plaza of the poor district as a historical landmark and an hommage[2] to the myth of the Golem and its significance. It would also be a form of protest against the segregation. He is expectantly having trouble with the local authorities : he has the support of some aug cops / local organization but the chief of the local police district is being coerced by local politician (the same who works at the print shop) to not display the Golem in the streets and not give in to aug rights activism. This is an echanged between Honza and the local authorities from the poor district. At some point the "police chief' talks about a certain sum of money that would help his request. Honza says he'll be working on gathering the sum if it's the only way it's going to happen...
Quest[]
- If player has successfully completed the quest, Honza will receive an email stating that his request for the display of his Golem has been approved and that the transporation[3] of the sculpture will be arranged shortly. Honza wonders what has happened and if a benefactor might have been involved (the player, obviously), but takes the good news with joy and answers that he's ready for them to come over and take the statue.
Email - golem display[]
- Email between Honza and his friend. The latter congratulates him on the success of his operation. He's happy that the poor district and the city in general finally has a historical landmark that also serves as a statement agains segratation[4] and is becoming a symbol for augmented people who finally have something to relate to.
The game files also mention the email identifier "ZZ_Email_SE_16_Honza_Golem_display"[5], which appears to be the identifier for the email described above. The text of this email is not known.
Email - Honza's books[]
- Email to a friend about the collection of history books and database that Honza accumulated (and memorized) over the years. His friend tells him that he doesn't even need the books since he can memorize everything thanks to his neural augs and memory enhancers. Honza replied that these books are priceless and are a legacy to the future and a historical duty as a human being etc. He also mentions his rarest books that he keeps safe 'behind his golem'. Subtle reference to the vent area of the apartement[6] where we can find XP ebook about the Golem Myth.
The corresponding email identifier in the game files is "ZZ_Email_SE_16_Honza_Old_Myths_book"[7]. The text of this email and the mentioned eBook are not known.
