In Deus Ex, "invincible" describes an attribute of certain non-player characters that renders them invulnerable to any damage, whether from the player or other non-player characters. Many characters are invincible presumably for story-related reasons. In such cases, invincibility prevents story-essential characters from being killed by the player. Some characters that are initially invincible can be killed later on as the story progresses.

The "invincible" attribute (bInvincible) can be set for characters via console commands.

List of invincible characters[]

  • The following characters are always invincible whenever they appear in normal gameplay: Paul Denton, Harley Filben, Alex Jacobson, Sam Carter, Jaime Reyes, Jock, Smuggler, Max Chen, Tracer Tong, Stanton Dowd, Nicolette DuClare, Morgan Everett, and Gary Savage. Nonetheless, as the story progresses, a few of these characters may die off-screen or in a cutscene, depending on story-related choices.
  • The following characters are invincible when initially encountered but can be killed later in the story: Gunther Hermann, Anna Navarre, Walton Simons, Gordon Quick, Toby Atanwe.
  • During the training mission, the troopers that appear in the stealth exercise are invincible. The player character (JC Denton) does not have true invincibility during the training mission, but is prevented from dying due to a special limit on health loss.
  • During the first mission, all UNATCO troopers that spawn after completing the primary objective at the top level of the statue of liberty are invincible, with the exception of the trooper that greets you at the top level of the statue.
  • During the first three visits to the UNATCO Headquarters, all characters inside the facility are invincible (including Joseph Manderley, Janice Reed, Shannon, and others), with the exception of two prisoners during the second visit.
    • During the second and third visit to the headquarters, all characters at the exterior of the facility are invincible.
    • During the fourth (and final) visit to the headquarters, all characters inside the facility can be killed, with the exception of Alex Jacobson, Sam Carter, and Jaime Reyes.

Notes[]

  • Subsequent games generally do not rely on invincibility to prevent story-essential characters from being killed during normal gameplay. Deus Ex: Invisible War has no invincible characters and often uses environment barriers to keep story-essential characters out of reach from the player. Deus Ex: Human Revolution introduced safe zones in which weapons are disabled, a method which Deus Ex: Mankind Divided also used.
