Joe Greene has written numerous articles for the Midnight Sun. In actuality, he is a spy working for UNATCO.

It's hard to get the warm fuzzies off a guy who feeds off the ills of society. You're in the business of trying to put terrorism out of business, and you get the feeling that terrorism is the kind of thing that keeps him in business.'

Misisons[]

Greene can be encountered during each of the three visits to Hell's Kitchen.

2nd Mission - Hell's Kitchen: During the first visit to Hell's Kitchen, Greene can be encountered in the Underworld Tavern. If spoken to, Greene will deduce that JC Denton is a member of UNATCO and will criticize UNATCO for murdering civilians as part of its crackdown against the NSF. If Greene is spoken to, Manderley will later chastise JC for talking to the press. If Greene is killed here, Manderley will reprimand JC for killing a civilian.
4th Mission - Hell's Kitchen: Greene can again be encountered in the tavern. If Greene was previously spoken to, JC will ask, "What I want to know is how my boss found out I talked to you," but Greene will deny knowing who JC's boss is.
7th Mission - Hell's Kitchen: During the final visit to Hell's Kitchen, Harley Filben will claim that Greene is a spy for UNATCO and will provide a photo to support his allegation. Greene can be encountered in the Free Clinic. If you speak to Greene and mention Stanton Dowd during the conversation, a thug will start shadowing you around town. If this thug comes within 8 feet of Dowd, you will be attacked by a large force of MJ12 Troopers after speaking with Dowd, seeming confirming that Greene is a spy for UNATCO and, by extension, MJ12. The thug will appear even if you kill Greene immediately after talking to him.

Notes[]

It is possible for Sandra Renton to mention "a guy in a gray jacket" claiming to be your cousin that is looking for you. It is likely that this was Joe Greene, as no other named characters in New York wears a gray jacket. Sandra suspects that he is a spy.
According to developer comments in the conversation data, Joe plans to arrange an ambush for the player if he becomes aware of the player's intentions in regard to meeting Stanton Dowd.^[1]
