MJ12 Commandos are elite troops equipped with bio-electrically powered combat armor. They are a type of non-player character in Deus Ex, appearing in the second half of the game.

Background[]

Refitted with the upgraded Obsidian power armor, MJ12 Commando detachments were deployed to high priority Majestic 12 facilities worldwide, on an as-needed basics. Rendered immune to biochemical attacks and capable of absorbing a large amount of conventional damage, Commandos operated under the direct command of MJ12 agents and tasked with maintaining the integrity of MJ12 facilities and support MJ12 operations in the field. One of the first teams was deployed to the MJ12 facility beneath UNATCO Headquarters.[1]

Commandos are selected from among regular MJ12 Troopers, with length of service an important factor.[2]

Characteristics[]

Commandos are one of the most dangerous type of humanoid enemies in Deus Ex. They are the only type of humanoids equipped with unique weapons not available to the player, namely the MJ12 Commando Gun and the MJ12 Rocket Launcher. The commando gun, which is generally used up-close, is far more deadly than the assault rifle, with twice the raw damage output as the latter, along with 15% higher base accuracy and no recoil.

At long range, commandos will switch to their rocket launcher. Their rocket launcher has a smaller blast radius and less damage as compared to GEP gun rockets, but has a much higher rate of fire. However, because the rocket travels rather slowly, commandos are generally less dangerous at long range than in close range. Commando rockets can be countered by the Aggressive Defense System augmentation.

With 250 HP, commandos are much more resilient than common troopers. Even at master skill level, both the pistol and stealth pistol require two headshots to take down a commando. The sniper rifle is capable of taking down a commando in a single headshot only at the advanced skill level or higher. The riot prod can take down a commando in a single charge only if the stealth damage modifier is invoked and master skill level has been attained. Against lethal melee weapons, commandos are still vulnerable to stealth head-hits. Since stealth head-hits have a 80x damage multiplier, a commando can be taken down in a single hit with a combat knife, at any skill level.

Commandos have full immunity to tear gas, and are thus not affected by the pepper spray and gas grenade. They also have 50% resistance against fire and plasma weapons, as well as against the poison damage of tranquilizer darts. These resistances and immunities are implemented via a shield ability, which causes a blue barrier to be displayed whenever damage from such sources is being negated or reduced. Despite their armored appearance, commandos have no special damage resistances against firearms.

Trivia[]

  • MJ12 Commandos were at first a mechanically augmented riot cop named "Megatech", before this design changed. This was changed to Majestic 12 soldier instead of a cop and his mechanical augmentation were completely redesigned to be power armor with a regular human inside instead of a mechanically augmented person.
