The MJ12 Sub Base,[1] or submarine base,[2] is a location visited in Deus Ex. The base is operated by Majestic 12 and is located on the new west cost of California. The sub base is a series of interconnected modules, with the mini-subs in the module submerged just offshore. The mini-subs housed in the base are used to access Majestic 12's Ocean Lab.
Background[]
The sub base was built on the southern California's sea wall, which is located on the "new west coast" that was formed when part of California's landmass slid into the ocean during the 2030 earthquake.
As of 2052, the sub base provides on-shore logistics support for the Ocean Lab, and includes a URV bay that houses mini-subs used to travel to and from the Ocean Lab. The sub base includes laboratories for researching marine animals such as Karkians.[3] According to Dr. Corwell, who operates the Karkian tank in the command module, MJ12 has been performing studies on creature morphology, resulting in horribly deformed creatures. Some of the scientists deployed at the sub base are affiliated with X-51 and its leader Gary Savage. These scientists were captured by MJ12 and were forced to work at the base's labs.[4]
Deus Ex[]
Prior to JC Denton's arrival, Tiffany Savage attempted to steal a mini-sub from the sub base in order to travel to the Ocean Lab, with the goal of entering the Ocean Lab to steal schematics needed by X-51 to complete their Universal Constructor. Tiffany was captured at the sub baes and was later held hostage by MJ12 at an abandoned gas station.
Afterwards, JC Denton repeats Tiffany's mission. JC is successful in entering the sub base and taking a mini-sub from its URV bay. Using the mini-sub, JC travels to the Ocean Lab, where he obtains the schematics that X-51 had sought.
Layout[]
The sub base is a series of interconnected platforms know as "modules." The main building, also known as the command module, is located onshore . Modules 1 and module 2 are located above the water. The URV bay, which is attached to module 2, is located underwater.
There are two points of entry into the modules. The main entrance to the command module is at the bottom of its large, central pillar. Alternatively, module 1 can be entered through a ladder that is partially in the water.
