Mari Hela is a Woman in Black who is in charge of an MJ12 operation in Paris and the Paris Catacombs in 2052. She appears as an adversary in Deus Ex.

Background

Hela is an MJ12 operative charged with assisting local authorities in Paris in hunting down members of Silhouette and the Illuminati. Another objective of hers was to discern the locations of Morgan Everett, Tracer Tong, Jaime Reyes, Alex Jacobson, and especially JC Denton. The latter was - correctly - suspected of trying to ally himself with the surviving Illuminati and Hela had standing orders to kill him, to prevent the creation of more organized resistance to MJ12.

She reports to Aston Greer of FEMA, and works with Inspector Gabily while trying to root out Silhouette. Gabily is elated to have her support. However, she unnerves the MJ12 troopers working with her, to the point that they compared her and her command post to "a harpie roosting in its nest," and noticed that she seemed to "get off" by being in the catacombs.

9th Mission - Paris Catacombs

Mission

• Mari can be encountered in her command post, flanked by two MJ12 commandos. While it is possible to simply stun her (or avoid her altogether), if JC chooses to fight Hela, she will taunt him by saying "Walton Simons says hello!" and pull out a shotgun. Hela is equal in fighting ability to other Women in Black, and like the rest, upon termination, her body explodes.

Notes

• Mari Hela is one of three WIBs whose voice is natural sounding as opposed to the mechanical sounding voices of most WIBs, the other two being the Laboratory Special Security in the VersaLife labs.
• If aware of JC, when attacking she will use unique quotes, different from the generic WiBs when provoked.
• If knocked out, Hela carries a Scope weapon modification, a LAW, and a Sawed off shotgun.
• Hela will try to use her LAW if out of ammo or if the player is a safe enough distance away. She has no animation for this, and will slide around using her last animation while it is held.

Trivia

• Hela's name is a reference to the goddess Hela in Norse mythology, as indicated by the login hela/ragnarok for the security terminal in her area (the password "ragnarok" referring to an event in Norse mythology). This login is mentioned in a datacube found in the catacombs.
• Her name may also be a double reference to the HeLa cell line, an immortal line of human cells used in countless experiments. That would tie into the pattern of naming MiBs after concepts related to cells, as seen with Agent Karyo.
