NSF veteran is encountered at Battery Park in Deus Ex.
Background[]
A devout Christian and former divisional commander of the Northwest Secessionist Forces during the Northwest War, the nameless veteran remembers the days of glorious warfare, fighting the infernal legions (United States Army) of the Devil himself (United States government), in the ranks of God's army (the NSF). It's unclear if his Christian zeal was always there, or if it's a way to cope with the pain of defeat, two decades of drifting, and eventually landing in Battery Park with naught but two magazines of .30-06 ammunition and suicidal ideation.[1] The veteran is quite frank about the reasons for the defeat in the previous war, noting a lack of organization and equipment as the primary reason for their defeat, and appreciating the way the National Secessionist Forces have built on the legacy of his army.[2] He sees them as a true people's militia,[3] and defeats by UNATCO as temporary setbacks, lessons writ in blood that the NSF will learn from.[4]
In fact, he sees the defeat as superficial: UNATCO may have won on the surface, occupying the streets of New York City, but with the rebels in possession of the subways and tunnals, he questioned whether the UN was victorious at all.[5] And even if the UN manages to reach them, he believes that with God's help, the NSF will give the "jackals" the slip.[6] He appears to realize that a UN victory would directly lead to a culling of the population considered undesirable.[7]
Interactions[]
| This character is a merchant. | Two .30-06 clips (c300 per) |
Other interactions[]
- Beyond allowing JC to purchase two clips of ammunition for the sniper rifle, the veteran will also suggest the existence of an alternate entrance to Fort Clinton (mentioning a bolt hole for the NSF to escape through)[8] and react to the outcome of the infiltration.[9]
- He will also quote passages from the Bible,[10] specifically Ezekiel 25:16-17 (King James Version).[11][12]

- ↑ NSF veteran: "Veteran: " We lost the battle today -- I admit it, yes Lord."
JC Denton: " You with the NSF?"
Veteran: " Had myself a division, mind you, back when we were the Northwest Secessionist Forces. Years ago. They thought they had us licked, like they think they have us licked tonight, but -- lookit me, young sir! -- we're God's army, and what infernal devil can stop God's army?"
JC Denton: " Well... you take care of yourself."
Veteran: " Found me two thirty-ought-six clips. Now all I need's a gun, and then it's me and Satan, yes Satan, one last look into the Devil's red eyes..."
JC Denton: " Sounds like you served God admirably in the Northwest War. But maybe you should let a soldier from the younger generation take the clips off your hands. What do you want for them?"
Veteran: " Huh... You mean, money? You wanna buy 'em? Well, guess I'd take about 300 for each one."
" - ↑ NSF veteran: "I seen a lot of battles, blessed be our Lord, back in the Northwest War. Didn't have uniforms back then, just a shotgun and all the shells you could carry. The NSF sure has grown up, praise Heaven. They got organization now. Listen to me, young sir. I can tell you: that's what lost it for us last time, what the government's always been good at and we haven't. But it looks like the boys got some discipline this time around, and your men better take note. That's right. Stand up, wipe your noses, and take note. You got yourselves a -- hail Jesus! -- you got yourselves a rebellion!"
- ↑ Veteran: " You fellas might scare Jim and Jane Stay-at-Home, but that's an army out there, a praise-the-Lord yes an honest-to-God people's militia."
- ↑ Veteran: " Tonight was a lesson, praise Jesus, a lesson writ in blood, but once again we gather amid whispers and secret numbers. We gather and wait."
- ↑ Veteran: " Now tell me, young sir, with that smart look on your face, if the army has the streets but the rebels still have the subways and tunnels, is that a UN victory? Those NSF boys certainly don't have trouble bringing in supplies, with or without the streets."
- ↑ Veteran: " With the help of angels and our God in Heaven, amen, our brothers tonight -- all but a few -- gave the jackals the slip."
- ↑ Veteran: " That's what I mean when I say the goal is EXTERMINATION. They don't need people. They just want to have machines do it all and get rid of everybody they don't need, Mother-of-God."
- ↑ Veteran: " No, sir, forget about the NSF. Most of those old forts have a "bolt hole." Those boys'll be long gone out a side tunnel by now."
- ↑ Veteran: " Those were good boys, every last one of them."
- ↑ Veteran: " ... work of the devil."
- ↑ Veteran: " Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines."
- ↑ Veteran: " And they shall know my name is the Lord when I raise my vengeance upon them."
