The Northwest Secessionist Forces, or NSF were the forerunners of the National Secessionist Forces, founded in 2031 in the wake of Utah's secession from the Union, and the declaration of secession by similar groups in Texas. The NSF were a loose alliance of paramilitary groups in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Texas,[1] tied to the New Sons of Freedom founded by Juan Lebedev.[2] Although organized into divisions and showing some semblance of military organization,[3] it remained a loose alliance - and that looseness was its critical weakness: NSF units were armed with whatever they could muster, down to hunting shotguns with shells, and lacked basic military equipment - most notably uniforms - and training. This undisciplined militia had to face the ruthless United States Army.[4]
Although the balance of power favored the Army, the NSF managed to inflict a number of defeats on its foe, including a devastating rout during the siege of Squalnomie, when thermoptic camo allowed NSF troopers to infiltrate and destroy a large Army unit. The eventual defeat provided brief respite, as the failure of the Northwest Secessionist Forces became a vital lesson for the future insurrectionist movement, the National Secessionist Forces.[5]

JC Denton: " You with the NSF?"
Veteran: " Had myself a division, mind you, back when we were the Northwest Secessionist Forces. Years ago. They thought they had us licked, like they think they have us licked tonight, but -- lookit me, young sir! -- we're God's army, and what infernal devil can stop God's army?"
JC Denton: " Well... you take care of yourself."
Veteran: " Found me two thirty-ought-six clips. Now all I need's a gun, and then it's me and Satan, yes Satan, one last look into the Devil's red eyes..."
JC Denton: " Sounds like you served God admirably in the Northwest War. But maybe you should let a soldier from the younger generation take the clips off your hands. What do you want for them?"
Veteran: " Huh... You mean, money? You wanna buy 'em? Well, guess I'd take about 300 for each one."

The NSF sure has grown up, praise Heaven. They got organization now. Listen to me, young sir. I can tell you: that's what lost it for us last time, what the government's always been good at and we haven't. But it looks like the boys got some discipline this time around, and your men better take note. That's right. Stand up, wipe your noses, and take note. You got yourselves a -- hail Jesus! -- you got yourselves a rebellion!"

ClinicMaleBum2: "Were you at Squalnomie?"
ClinicMaleBum1: "Yeah. It was night, they came in with thermoptic camo and we never picked 'em up on any of the sensors. What a goddamned mess. Had a hard time sleeping after that. Didn't do real good on the psych evals either. Got drummed out in short order."
ClinicMaleBum2: "The Army probably didn't want to have any reminders hanging around."
ClinicMaleBum1: "Yeah, and now look what they got: NSF in downtown Manhattan. Same guys that nearly whupped us in the Northwest. Bet the brass remembers Squalnomie now."
