Overclocking is a minor mechanic in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which appears after the first visit to Václav Koller and the revelation that Jensen picked up some extra augs after Panchea. These experimental augmentations are untested, unsafe, and very powerful, but each one unlocked will add to Jensen's overclock rating. Koller will encourage Jensen to disable other augs to manage his overclock rating, as unlike computers, you can't just slather Adam in thermal paste.

Effects[]

Each activated experimental aug increases overclock rating by +50%. Each deactivated aug reduces overclock rating by -50%. Player can deactivate any non-purchased (white color) augs, including experimental, to reduce overclock rating.

In practical terms, each experimental aug will increase Jensen's overclock rating, which will produce a variety of glitches. These are primarily nuisances, rather than actual gameplay problems, which means that for all intents and purposes, overclocking is safe to do. The Neuroplasticity Calibrator will permanently remove overclock penalties for a given playthrough. The effects are as follows:

  • 150%: Aug glitches occasionally happen, similar to the ones after the Prague bombing. Expect radar to reset occasionally.
  • 300%: Visual artifacting starts to appear and some augs can malfunction, killing Jensen (explosive nano blades, anyone?).
  • 350%: Periodic resets of your HUD and vision. After several, you get a call from Koller giving you one final advice to balance the load.
  • 450%: Jensen will experience a system crash randomly. It will reboot after 15 seconds or so, and you get a special call with Koller, which reveals that Jensen just lost an aug. A random aug will get permanently disabled, dropping the overclock rating to 400% permanently. Player may even lose aug which was already purchased with praxis, without refund. After aug is reactivated by Koller, to use it, player has to spend praxis on this aug again.

Only these 7 augs may be automatically disabled due to overheating: Social Enhancer, Hacking Stealth, LiDAR Mark-Tracker, Implanted Rebreather, Typhoon, Glass-Shield Cloaking System, Rhino Dermal Armor.

Augmentations menu with all experimental augs purchased (noisy non-red) and all possible augs automatically disabled (red) due to endless overheat-reboot loop.

If player has Micro-Assembler available and activates all 8 experimental augs, without manually deactivating any augs, player will enter endless overheat-reboot loop. During this loop player will lose all 7 augs from previous list, one by one on each reboot. Overheat-reboot loop does not stop after this, but player stops losing augs. Loop is temporarily paused during dialogues, hacking and when player is anywhere near Koller. To stop endless overheat-reboot loop, player has to manually deactivate at least 2 augmentations. This will drop overclock rating to 400%. Augs which were automatically disabled during overheat-reboot loop stay disabled permanently! Koller can't fix them!

Even though endless overheat-reboot loop causes bad and persistent visual and sound artifacts, all active and purchased augs remain usable. During some loop periods player may not be able to see HUD, view augs in augmentations menu and change key-to-aug mapping, but there are periods when all these things can be done too.

Bug[]

Do not deactivate Typhoon augmentation. When reactivated and purchased, Typhoon will only work in "gas" mode, no matter what configuration you choose.
