The Pepper Gun is a low-tech skill weapon in Deus Ex. It is a non-lethal weapon that is used to stun enemies.
Description[]
Characteristics[]
The pepper gun emits a cloud of tear gas. Tear gas inflicts no actual damage, but causes enemies to be blinded and stunned. Stunned enemies receive 4x the damage that they would otherwise take (except that the multiplier for stealth attacks does not apply to stunned targets). Therefore, the function of the pepper gun is not to inflict damage, but to stun enemies, disabling them and making them more vulnerable to other weapons.
A small burst is enough to stun an enemy. Once the enemy has been stunned, it is not necessary to consume further ammunition. Tear gas affects all humanoids except for MJ12 Commandos, who are immune. Tear gas has no effect on robots and transgenic creatures.
The pepper gun's combat function is similar to that of the riot prod, which also stuns enemies. However, the riot prod also inflicts actual damage that can render targets unconscious, whereas the pepper gun cannot render targets unconscious on its own. For this reason, the pepper gun is generally used in conjunction with another weapon, such as a baton or a mini-crossbow loaded with tranquiller darts if non-lethality is desired. A single headshot from a tranquilizer dart will render unconscious any common trooper that has been stunned by tear gas.
Some laser tripwires can be bypassed by obscuring the laser with a cloud of tear gas from the pepper gun. Only laser tripwires set to detect the player or NPCs can be bypassed in this manner. Laser tripwires set to detect all objects will be triggered by the tear gas. In general, there is no way of knowing in advance whether a laser tripwire will be triggered by tear gas.
Notes[]
- "Blinded" and "stunned" are concurrent but separate states caused by tear gas. Blinded enemies do not perceive the player, and undergo an eye-rubbing animation. However, it is the stunned state that enables the 4x damage multiplier.
- The pepper gun is one of two weapons that inflict the "TearGas" damage type, the other being the gas grenade.
- The fire extinguisher functions as a one-use version of the pepper gun.
- Unlike the tear gas emitted by the gas grenade, tear gas from the pepper gun will not damage the player.
- While MJ12 troopers and NSF terrorists are graphically depicting as having goggles, they have no actual resistance to tear gas for purposes of game mechanics, and will still undergo the eye-rubbing animation when blinded.
