Rachel Mead is the first lady of the United States and wife of president Philip Riley Mead. She appears in the intro sequence of Deus Ex, but was originally intended to have a greater role in the story.

Development history[]

In the Shooter: Majestic Revelations precuror concept, Rachel was planned to appear in Mount Weather along with Philip Mead and other members of her family. Mount Weather was later cut from the game.

The First Lady is a strong woman who, like so many women before her, gave up a career (as a university professor of history) to support her husband in his political aspirations.

Her background can provide lots of clues into the genesis and history of secret societies like the Illuminati and its arms and off-shoots.

In the final game, Rachel appears sitting besides Philip Mead in the part of the intro sequence of Deus Ex in which Joseph Manderley addresses members of UNATCO. No explicit mention of her or her name appears during the course of the game. However, her appearance in the intro is confirmed by the Deus Ex Bible. Rachel's unique character model, which is used in the intro, also retains the label "Rachel Mead."
