The riot cop is a type of armed non-player character in Deus Ex. Riot cops are part of the police force that patrols New York City in 2052. As members of the police, they are usually armed and may be either friendly or hostile, depending on JC Denton's actions and the circumstances.
Characteristics[]
Riot cops have the same stats as other common troopers such as the UNATCO trooper, except that they are immune to the "TearGas" and "HalonGas" damage types.[1] Therefore, riot cops are immune to the effects of the pepper gun, gas grenade, and fire extinguisher. The riot cop's immunity to tear gas and halon gas is consistent with their visual depiction of wearing a fully enclosed helmet.
Locations[]
Riot cops are encountered during each of the three visits to Hell's Kitchen, as well as the second visit to Battery Park.
- Two riot cops are present during the first visit to Hell's Kitchen. One carries a sawed-off shotgun and the other carries a riot prod. They will not interfere with the battle between UNATCO and the NSF, but will attack any others who engage in prohibited behavior. For example, they will they will attack the pimp in the other alley if they hear him shooting at JC or Sandra Renton.
- Several riot cops are present during the second visit to Battery Park, helping UNATCO troopers guard the area. This time they are unarmed.
- One riot cop is present during the second visit to Hell's Kitchen, carrying a sawed-off shotgun and standing near the park. He will warn JC about the UNATCO raid at the hotel. He will remain neutral even after UNATCO invades Hell's Kitchen.
- Six riot cops can be encountered on the third visit to Hell's Kitchen. They all carry assault rifles and are hostile to JC. For each riot cop that is killed or rendered unconscious by JC, two UNATCO troopers will spawn as reinforcements.[2] Due to what may be a scripting oversight, riot cops may attack UNATCO and MJ12 forces that engage in hostile behavior against JC.
Notes[]
- The riot cop and the MJ12 Commando are the only generic humanoid enemies types that have any amount of resistance or immunity against particular damage types.
- While the riot cop is immune to the "TearGas" and "HalonGas" damage types, they are not immune to the far less common "PoisonGas" damage type. However, poison gas is emitted only by certain objects of the environment, and none exist in the areas in which riot cops are found.
