Robots of various types appear in Deus Ex. Some robots are adversarial, while others offer services that may be utilized by the player. Robots are one of five general types of scripted game entities, the others being animals and the three base classes of non-player characters.

Overview[]

Two general types of robots are present in the game: armed robots and service robots. Armed robots play a role that is similar to armed NPCs, and can be hostile or friendly depending on the circumstances. Armed robots are generally more durable than human NPCs due to their damage resistances and high HP. Damage modifiers that apply to human NPCs, such as headshot and stealth multipliers, do not apply to robots.

Service robots include two types of robots that offer essential gameplay functions. The medical bot is used to heal and to install new augmentations. The repair bot is used to recharge bioelecric energy. A third type of service robot, the cleaner bot, only serves as a cosmetic element of the game environment, and has no beneficial functionalities.

Resistances[]

All robots have the following resistances against specific damage types.[1]

  • Robots have full immunity against the TearGas, HalonGas, PoisonGas, Radiation, KnockedOut, and Poison/PoisonEffect damage types. Therefore, robots are fully immune to all damage or special effects caused by the pepper gun (TearGas damage), gas grenade (TearGas damage), fire extinguisher (HalonGas damage), baton (KnockedOut damage), and the mini-crossbow's tranquilizer darts (Poison and PoisonEffect damage).
  • Robots have 75% resistance against the Shot, Flamed, and Burned damage types. Shot is the most common damage type in the game, and is inflicted by by firearm bullets and all lethal melee weapons.
  • Robots have 50% resistance against Stunned damage caused by the riot prod.
  • The only lethal damage types for which robots have no resistance are Exploded (damage caused by explosives), Sabot (damage from shotgun sabot rounds), and AutoShot (damage caused by the guns of automated turrets).

Destroying or disabling[]

Robots can be destroyed using any form of damage against which they are not immune. Robots explode when destroyed, causing damage to the surrounding area. The explosion's blast radius and base damage depends on the robot's collision size.[2]

Robots can also be rendered harmless in two ways:

  • Robots can be shut down by EMP damage. Robots have EMP hit points, a separate health counter that tracks the amount of damage taken from EMP attacks. Once EMP HP is reduced to zero, the robot shuts down permanently. EMP damage is typically available to the player through an EMP grenade or the spy drone augmentation.
  • Robots switch alliances temporarily when hit by scramble grenades.
  • Unlike later games in the series, robots in Deus Ex are usually not controlled by a computer terminal. However, there are some occasions in which hacking a computer device enables the player to disable robots.

Legend

  • Displayed Name – The in-game object name of the robot
  • Class – The internal class name of the robot. The internal class name is also the identifier used to summon a robot via console commands.
  • HP – The health of the robot, which is the amount of damage that the robot can sustain before being destroyed.
  • EMP HP – The EMP health of the robot, which is the amount of EMP damage that the robot can sustain before shutting down permanently.
  • Speed – The ground speed attribute (GroundSpeed), which defines how quickly the robot moves.
  • Size – The collision radius and collision height of the robot. All values are given in Unreal engine units. 16 units is equivalent to 1 feet depicted in-game.
  • Explosion – The attributes of the explosion that occurs when the robot is destroyed. The explosion is defined in terms of its blast radius and base damage, which are derived from the collision radius and collision height:[2]
    • Blast radius = (Collision Radius + Collision Height) × 4
    • Damage = (Collision Radius + Collision Height) × 0.25

Notes[]

  • Robot destruction explosions do not have gradual hurt steps (for more details on explosion mechanics, please see the article on explosions).[2]
  • An additional robot, SecurityBot4, does not appear in the game's story but can be summoned by console commands.
