The Roccasecca Beach VersaLife facility, located offshore from San Francisco, California, United States, is a major research facility run by VersaLife. The facility is mentioned in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Background[]

It is suggested that the facility's offshore location was designed to allow the facility to avoid the impact of earthquakes hitting the mainland.[1]

Researchers at the facility include Megan Reed, who develops the Orchid while working at the facility.

At one point prior to the events of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, a research assistant named Anneke Norstadt working at this facility was, intentionally or accidentally, poisoned with the Orchid. However, her death was officially written off by VersaLife as an "industrial accident."

Other research at the facility includes the use of nanites for pharmacological applications.[2]

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided[]

When Adam Jensen returns from Golem City, he learns from Alex Vega that Anneke Norstadt was poisoned at the facility under mysterious circumstances.[3]

Later, Jensen learns that Task Force 29 director Joseph Manderley had ordered Central European branch director Jim Miller to frame the Augmented Rights Coalition for a break-in at the facility that has yet to occur, as part of a plot to implicate ARC for terrorist incidents that have nothing to do with ARC. Bob Page was not pleased to discover that Manderley had given such an order to Miller, but tells Manderley that he intends to take advantage of the break-in to clean up a related incident, potentially referring to the incident surrounding the death of Anneke Norstadt.[4]

Breach[]

A Ripper discovers that VersaLife had unethically faked the death of a six-year-old girl named Lindsey Thompson, who was receiving an experimental nanite treatment from VersaLife for leukemia. When the nanites were successful in controlling Lindsey's leukemia and exhibited other useful pharmacological functions, VersaLife faked Lindsey's death to her parents and transferred her to the Roccasecca Beach facility for further research. The treatment contract had specified that VersaLife would maintain possession of Lindsey's body if she were to die during the treatment.

Having learned that the girl is still alive, the Ripper disables the facility's security systems to allow Watchstan68 to rescue Lindsey from the facility. Lindsey is reunited with her parents, but dies shortly afterwards when the nanites self-destruct or otherwise cease functioning. ShadowChild speculates that VersaLife had implemented a self-destruct mechanism to protect their research.[2]
