Security keypads are security devices in Deus Ex. Keypads typically serve as electronic locks for doors or other barriers.
Overview[]
Keypads can be unlocked either by entering the correct passcode, or by bypassing the keypad using a multitool. Bypassing a keypad will permanently expend the multitool. In some cases, a door locked by a keypad can also be passed by simply destroying the door. However, some doors are indestructible and cannot be passed without use of the keypad.
The longest keypad code is a 7-digit code in the Brooklyn Naval Shipyards, while the shortest code is 1 digit long. Keycodes can be found written on paper and in datacubes, but the player can always open the keypad with nothing but the code, such as guessing or having prior knowledge of the code. There is no penalty for missing a code.
The game features three styles of keypads with different mesh models and textures, but they are all functionally identical to one another.
Trivia[]
- While the keypad has # and * keys, only one keypad code uses # (and no reference to that code can be found in-game) and none use *.
- Keypads in the game trigger DTMF tones of real-world touch tone telephones when numbers are entered. However, the tones of in-game keypads do not correspond to the keymapping of DTMF tones, but are instead a remapping of those tones. The following table shows the mapping, with the entries to the left of '=' listing the keypad button from the game, and the entries to the right listing the DTMF key tones that the game button produces.
1=9 2=6 3=5 4=7 5=1 6=5 7=3 8=6 9=1 *=8 0=4 #=5
