In Deus Ex, Skill Points (SP) are used to level up skills. At the start of the game, the player is given an initial set of skill points to allocate toward skills. Additional skill points are earned during the course of the game.
Overview[]
5000 skill points are given at the start of the game. However, if the pistol skill is downgraded from "trained" to "untrained," 1575 skill points are refunded, for a total of 6575 initial skill points.
During each mission, there are various triggers that award skill points. Many skill point triggers coincide with completing or making progress toward mission goals. However, skill points and mission goals are separate from one another, and many mission goals do not have any corresponding skill points. Other skill point triggers are associated with exploration of the game environments, including reaching particular locations of interest.
Skill points are often associated with a reward category that is displayed in the in-game log. These categories include Exploration Bonus, Area Location Bonus, Critical Location Bonus, Progress Bonus, Accomplishment Bonus, Goal Accomplishment Bonus, and Subject Acquisition Bonus. However, these reward categories are merely labels, and have no gameplay significance. In many instances, skill point awards have no category label.

- **The maximum amount of skill points attainable on this mission differs between the maps included with the Game of the Year Edition of the game and the maps of Deus Ex versions 1002f and 1003_F/I8. The "cumulative" column is computed only based on the GOTY values. For Deus Ex versions 1002f and 1003_F/I8, the cumulative is +45 higher from the 8th mission onward, and an additional +50 for the 13th Mission.

*Due to what appears to be an oversight, the pistol skill will automatically be set to trained even if initially downgraded to untrained. By downgrading the pistol skill to untrained, the first upgrade for the pistol skill is obtainable for 0 skill points.
Mastering all skills would require 86925 skill points (or 85350 skill points with the pistol skill exploit), which is far more than the total skill points available as listed above.
