"The stealth pistol is a variant of the standard 10mm pistol with a larger clip and integrated silencer designed for wet work at very close ranges."
— inventory description, Deus Ex

The stealth pistol is a silenced 10mm handgun in Deus Ex.

Background

Created some time between 2028 and 2052, the stealth pistol is a silenced variant of the IMM Austin, designed for wet work at very close ranges. It features a larger clip along with an integral silencer. The stealth pistol is also invisible to metal detectors.

It features an unusual design for a handgun, placing the trigger and grip beneath the barrel, and placing the ammo stock separately on the backend of the weapon as well as having no cocking mechanism; this is likely in order to contain the gasses and burst of light that emits when a bullet is fired, removing the need for an attached silencer.

The PS20 was built to replace the stealth pistol but it was limited to only one shot due to its compact design, complementing the assassin's arsenal rather than making the stealth pistol obsolete.

Characteristics

The player is given a stealth pistol by Sam Carter after completing the first mission. MiBs may use the stealth pistol, though this is rare. It can be found in the Cathedral in a room near the top of the building.

Contrary to common sense, the Stealth Pistol is a good weapon except in the role it was designed for: assassination. The damage is so small that you need to be a Master in Pistols to headshot a normal grunt. Hovewer the magazine size is decent and the fire rate is second only to the assault rifle. In fact, the Stealth Pistol dramatically outperforms the assault rifle in terms of damage per second because of the latter's very low damage per bullet - the only weapon which outperforms the stealth pistol in damage output is the Plasma Rifle.

As such the stealth pistol, especially modded, can be effectively used as your primary weapon for most of the game. Hovewer keep in mind that it relies on firing a lot of bullets for damage, so if you didn't invest in your Pistol weapons skill you might quickly find yourself short on ammo, especially later in the game. It is dropped by JoJo Fine in the 'Ton Hotel.

Behind the scenes

  • The stealth pistol is heavily based on the fictional Seburo CX "Compact eXploder" that appears in Ghost in the shell and Appleseed that are works of manga artist Masamune Shirow.
