Training is an optional tutorial mode and mission in Deus Ex. When "new game" is selected for the first time, the game will present the options for entering or skipping training. Training can also be accessed from the main menu of the game.
The training mission is set at the UNATCO Training Facilities and depicts JC Denton's training with UNATCO before being deployed for active duty.
The mission is divided into three map segment. The first map segment features general training headed by Jaime Reyes. The next segment features combat training headed by Gunther Hermann. The final map segment features covert training and a final test, which are headed by Anna Navarre and Jaime Reyes, respectively.
NPCs that can be interacted with during the training mission are invincible. That is, they do not take damage from weapons. Similarly, JC Denton cannot die during the training mission,[1] although he can have his legs reduced to 0 HP, in which case movement is impaired and jumping is disabled.
Walkthrough[]
General training[]
The first series of rooms teaches unlocking doors:
- Open the door from the lobby to the first room (in this room, Jaime Reyes and an unnamed government official are visible through the window).
- Pick up the NanoKey and use the keyring to unlock the next door.
- Destroy supply crates using a crowbar or combat knife to obtain a lockpick. Then, use the lockpick to unlock the next door.
- Read a datacube to find a code. Then, use the code on the keypad to unlock the door.
- Use a multitool to bypass the keypad to unlock the door.
The next room opens to an unconscious UNATCO trooper on the ground. Loot the key from the trooper and use it to unlock the door to the medical table. Then, pick up the trooper and place him on the medical table.
The next room teaches the basics of augmentations and bioenergy. The room is dark, but can be illuminated by the light augmentation. There is also a switch that turns on the light. After passing through the room, a repair bot is present to recharge the bioenergy expended by the light.
On the way to the next area, a security camera is showcased. The next part teaches jumping over gaps, crouching, using and moving crates to jump over taller obstacles, and climbing ladders. In the final part, wear a hazmat suit while swimming across contaminated water. Afterwards, use the medical bot to heal the health lost during the swim.
Combat training[]
The first part of combat training teaches pistols and aiming. The goal is to shoot two targets with the pistol. Gunther suggests waiting for the aiming crosshairs to tighten for the second target. This exercise is then repeated using a sniper rifle. With the sniper rifle, Gunther suggests using the scope to fire with more accuracy. After the first target is destroyed, the player is given master level rifle skill to show how higher skill level reduces scope sway.
The next part showcases demolitions. Press the button to send a security bot to a LAM, which explodes and destroys the bot. Then, you are tasked with planting your own LAM to destroy another robot as it walks by (alternatively, the LAM can be thrown to destroy the robot).
The next part teaches destroying doors and walls with explosives.
The last part of combat training teaches disarming explosives. Approach each LAM and disarm using the "use" key; then pick up the LAM. Alternatively, LAMs can be detonated by throwing other LAMs at them (or by failing to disarm them before they detonate). Once all LAMs have been picked up or detonated, the door to covert training opens.
Covert training[]
In this exercise, you must sneak past two guards and reach the door at the end of the hallway. If you are seen, the guards will trigger an alarm and close the door, and the door must then be reset at the starting control room.
Final test[]
For the final test, you must cross to the other side of the water. A security bot patrols back and forth and will shoot if it sees the player. There are multiple ways to complete the objective. For example, you may:
- Blow up the robot using TNT, which can be thrown at the robot.
- Find one of the pistols and fire at a barrel or TNT to blow up the robot.
- Avoid the robot.
- Build a bridge out of boxes to jump across.
- Jump onto the pipes using objects and walk across.
- Find the datacube containing the code to the bridge keypad.
- Destroy the crate to find a multitool to hack the bridge keypad.
After completing the final test, you can view six holograms to learn about UNATCO, the NSF, the 100101 small security bot, the Page Bravo-3 Peacebringer medium-sized security bot, mechanically augmented agents like Anna Navarre, and nano-augmented agents like Paul Denton.
A protruding brick near the floor can be pushed to reveal another holographic communicator. Through the communicator, Reyes will state that Joseph Manderley likes to know which agents find the secret.
The training mission ends with a conversation with Bob Page.
